Staff Development Success Stories
Kaleida Health and Erie Community College partnered to offer workforce development training with a central sterile processing technician course in spring 2006, and 10 of the 14 staff members who applied and took the exam in October successfully achieved certification.

Congratulations go to (pictured L to R, back row) Geraldine Nixon; Monique Franklin; Jennear Quarles; Denise R. Dickenson; Marco A. Fuentes; Carolyn McMillen; Lawonder Martin; Harriet Moore Jones; K’Lynn Girdlestone and Tonya Minor.
The course, which gives an overview of the information and study materials needed to obtain certification as a sterile processing technician, was made available through a workforce training grant obtained by ECC. Content was taught by three Kaleida Health employees: (pictured L to R, front row) Suzanne Bradley RN, BSN, CNOR, clinical educator, BGH; Wilhelmina Jones, sterile processing manager, corporate lead; and Karen Haskill-Kibler RN, MSN, clinical educator, WCHOB; Adelfa Gleave (photo shy), a central sterile processing technician at
WCHOB, also successfully achieved certification as a surgical instrument processor after completing the appropriate exam.
Participation was made possible through a grant given to Karen Haskill-Kibler by the Kaleida Health Board of Directors for being named a Nurse of Distinction earlier this year. (Adel already holds a certification in central sterile processing).
Colleague Kudos
Wilhelmina Jones, sterile processing manager (corporate lead), recently accepted an invitation to join the Educational Opportunity Center Vocational Technical Advisory Council at the University of Buffalo. The EOC program provides counseling and information on college admissions to qualified adults who want to enter or continue a program of post-secondary education. Wilhelmina will also serve as clinical instructor for a sterile processing training course at UB in January 2007, an educational opportunity for staff and students that she played an instrumental role in establishing.
